Should you have a Micro Wedding?

Should you have a Micro Wedding?

So the past 18 months have been a washout for Weddings, what with the global pandemic making a mockery of our summer plans it is difficult to see how we can possibly get back to normality again once this is all over (and it will be over at some point, so don’t stress). Thanks to Covid-19 we’ve seen huge cancellations of weddings as many couples wonder what to do in the face of this Corona outbreak. It’s a heart-breaking experience, realising that the wedding of your dreams isn’t possible due to the new restrictions. Does that mean you can’t get married at all? No; weddings are still going on, only now we might call them a micro wedding instead. But the real question is this, should you have a Micro Wedding?
Micro Wedding
The fact is that whilst you might consider this out of necessity at first, a micro wedding could actually be the best way to celebrate your big day. After all, the idea of your wedding day is for you to celebrate the love between you and your partner. Sometimes it can be great to do this with a huge crowd of your friends and family, but it can be equally special to get married with only a few of your very nearest and dearest to bear witness. Even if it weren’t for the Corona virus, when asked whether you should have a micro wedding, the answer might just be yes regardless.

Is it right for you?

The big reason to do this is going to come down to cost. Simply put, weddings are an expensive endeavour, and sometimes we don’t always have the money to put on a big showy wedding like you might see on TV. Maybe you’re saving up for a deposit on a house, or you want the honeymoon of a lifetime, or you just have other things you need your money for. In that case you might want to have a special day that doesn’t break the bank. With a micro wedding you can keep it special and save some pennies at the same time.

Don’t fancy wearing something borrowed, or something blue? Got your something new but your something old just doesn’t cut it? With a micro wedding you can set your own rules, so no having to follow all of the old wedding traditions. It can be wonderfully freeing to rid yourself of the old ways of doing things and make the day completely your own. Maybe you can come up with some new traditions that you and your small number of guests can take part in.

Anyone who has ever planned a wedding knows that as soon as your family find out they usually have an opinion on what you should be doing and how you should be doing it. Suddenly the uncle that you never talk to begins bombarding you with messages about the style of cake you need to serve. Parents are mostly well-meaning but they love to point out how they did it and make comments on who you’re inviting and who you’re not. With a micro wedding you can do away with any of that by citing how simple things are going to be and how unique you want them. As soon as everyone knows that your wedding is going to be something different, they don’t have the frame of reference to meddle. Or rather, that’s mostly how it goes, we’re sure some family members will still find a way.

What about my Aunt's Friend, and Dad's Neighbour?

That brings us to the guest list. It’s time to streamline who you really want to celebrate your special day with you. As soon as someone gets married everyone they’ve ever met is secretly wondering whether or not they’ll be getting an invite. As soon as they know it’s a micro wedding then instantly everyone becomes more understanding. Of course you wouldn’t invite your boss when you can only invite a few close friends and family. It also cuts the idea of having lots of bridesmaids and ushers which means a lot less social politics.

Less Guests = More Venue Choice

No matter where in the country you might live, there are always going to be interesting and quirky venues to hire. Now that you don’t have to cram in over a hundred guests, this could be your chance to get a venue that is a bit off-the-wall. An interesting local pub with a bit of history behind it? A small period house or building? A rustic seaside venue? There are so many more options in front of you now that you’ve chosen to go micro, and ones that none of your guests will ever forget.

In fact, forget the venue altogether and have the wedding at home. If you or your family have a large enough garden you could rent a marquee and do as you please. Maybe you fancy a BBQ cooked by your new father-in-law, or even a pop up bar in the corner and a karaoke machine. You control the venue, and you control exactly how it looks and what’s on offer.
